Minister Chebat speaks out on BTL’s acquisition of Cayo Television Network – Love FM
About a week ago we also broke the story that Belize Telemedia Limited was buying Alternative Networks-Cayo Television Network (CTN). The idea, it seems, is that the telecom giant will use this avenue to create television content. Indeed, the company had been considering acquiring a cable company for years, but ANL not only provides cable but also IPTV. This means the company has acquired the Switch TV app, something similar to Netflix but only available to subscribers in Belize. We asked the Minister of Public Services about the acquisition today.
Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Services: “BTL is run by a board of directors and I believe they have an obligation to expand their services and increase their revenue stream. I understand it was a deliberation of their board and they felt it was an essential part of the service they wanted to offer and so in their deliberate judgment they felt it was a good investment .
Journalist: The main owners of BTL, the government of Belize, should take an interest in this, how do you think this advances the government’s agenda to ensure that communication is accessible to everyone across the country?
Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Services: “Well, as you know, we have members who sit on the board of directors who are up to date with the policies and the plan of the government and so their job is really to make sure that when those decisions are made, they are broadly aligned with government policies and plans.
