New World Fishing Guide Tips: How To Fish, With Rods And Where To Find Bait
New World has a sufficient amount of interesting mechanics for players to dive into, and Fishing is no exception. From the types of rods to the different fish to catch, it’s not all easy.
New World has something for every type of player to find fun, whether through crafting, becoming a mighty great ax wielder, or a spellbinding AoE mage.
Fishing is just one of them, taking place in the wilderness of beautiful Aeternum Island, and is similar to the other crafting professions available.
With different bait and rod levels to increase the chances of catching better fish in the game, there are a lot of moving parts to be aware of.
How to fish in the New World
To fish in the New World, simply follow these steps:
- Find a lake or other body of water.
- Once there press F3 to take out your fishing rod.
- If you want to use bait, press R to equip it.
- Hold down left mouse button to indicate how far to cast your line.
- Once happy with the distance, release the button, and you will be thrown into the water.
- When an icon representing a fish and a hook appears, press the key. left mouse button again to hang it.
- If successful, a check mark will appear.
- Following this, an indicator will appear with a slowly filling white circle.
- Keep an eye out for this indicator as it changes from green to orange to red.
- Let go of the button once it turns red and starts to shake.
- Once it comes back to green, press the button again.
- Complete this process until the indicator fills up.
- That’s it, you have now caught your first fish!
While it is easy to catch the fish itself, there is a lot more you need to know to fully reap the rewards.

Making a fishing rod in the New World
To make a simple wooden fishing rod, you just need to follow these steps:
- Get 1x fiber. These can be obtained by harvesting them from hemp plants.
- Get 1x green wood. These are readily available by collecting resources from bushes around the world.
- Head to a campfire and craft a Wooden fishing rod.
In addition to the standard pole that you can craft right off the bat, there is a 4 additional levels available, with each increase your throw distance, the probability of catch a rarer fish. Higher pole levels also require a great deal of engineering skill to be successfully manufactured.

The first four poles will fall elite enemies all over the map, but the Legendary the rods are reserved for real fishermen, being reserved for those who complete the fishing questline.

Where to find fishing bait in the New World
While the bait is completely optional to use when fishing, it will be considerably increase the rate at which you get a bite, while increasing your chances of catch rarer fish.
Players can find bait all over the New World environment, for example by searching in Heather or bulrush bushes. These are located around lakes and waterbeds. Other baits require fabrication to be obtained. The full list of all available baits is shown below:
